Black/NorthSEAS is an arts festival with collaborative partners from the North and Black Sea regions. The central idea is to use contemporary art from these two areas, on opposite sides of Europe, to create collaborations and build lasting cultural connections. To unite art with other areas of society is an important element in this project.
Within their own countries, the artists and artist groups in this project are amongst the most recognised in their fields.
Black/North SEAS had its premiere in Odessa, Ukraine in 2008, and has toured around the Black Sea: Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. In 2009 the festival is touring the North Sea countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Great Britain.
Tromsø is the national host city and the only stop for Black/North SEAS in Norway.
SEAS Tromsø will put the Black Sea region in focus and start a process that aims to connect Tromsø and the north of Norway with the Black Sea region by opening new corridors.
The festival will be citywide with Tromsø Kunstforening as its festival centre.
Tromsø Kunstforening is the producer and co-curator for SEAS Tromsø, with its partners being Troms County Council and Tromsø Council. Black/North SEAS was initiated and is run centrally by Intercult in Sweden.
SEAS Tromsø is partly financed with considerable EU funding, and is supported by Intercult, Nordic Culture Fund, Tromsø Council, Troms County Council and Arts Council Norway.
