BORDERLINE
A Muslim, a Christian and a Jewish prayer are woven together to create a tapestry of sound that meets the soundscape of the city. Beautiful melodic sounds, female voices, male voices, and different languages wave back and forth, sometimes together, sometimes in opposition.
The call to prayer from the minaret of a mosque reminds us that it is time for prayer according to the Koran in Muslim tradition. With regards to noise restriction, in Norway there are limitations on the use of speakers for the call to prayer in the public environment. In several countries of the Black Sea region, calls to prayer are a central part of the soundscape. One of the biggest contrasts a visitor from a city by the Black Sea will experience, is probably the silence in Norway’s public spaces. Borderline touches on many different issues of political, religious and ethnic character.
